Guidelines for Trailer Towing

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, drivers need to make safe decisions when driving and towing a trailer.
  1. Vehicle Selection

    • NHTSA encourages drivers to review manufacturer's guidelines about the types of trailers. Vehicles such as vans, trucks and compact cars each have different towing ranges. Ensure that your vehicle can safely tow a particular kind of trailer before hitching the trailer to your vehicle.

    Hitch Connection

    • Hitch systems are designed specifically for a particular vehicle and trailer. Manufacturers and dealers provide towing or hitch packages for vehicles. These packages include parts and accessories such as heavy-duty radiators and alternators.

    Loads and Tires

    • The NHTSA recommends that drivers do not mix bias and radial tires. Other recommendations include buying the proper size tire, verifying the load range, balancing the load in the trailer and maintaining proper tire pressure.

    Legal Requirements

    • Each state has different requirements for towing vehicles and some require special permits and licenses based on trailer size and weight. Additional trailer safety equipment is required in some states.
