If you accept that you will not find entirely smoke-free casinos, the next step is to figure out which casinos are going to have the least smoky atmospheres. Many casinos such as the Wynn Las Vegas use a system called "pathing." This directs nonsmokers from the door to the smoke-free tables and machines by guiding them through the clearest areas of the casino. You can enjoy the smoke-free atmosphere in the poker rooms at the Wynn and tables can be designated nonsmoking upon request, though these requests are less likely to be honored at busy times.

The 10 hotels owned by MGM-Mirage in Las Vegas have taken more steps than most to make their casinos as pleasant as possible for nonsmokers. You probably won't be able to avoid the smell of cigarettes completely, but you should be able to find tables or areas of slot machines where you don't have to fight for fresh air. Cindy Ortega, MGM-Mirage's Senior Vice President of Energy and Environmental Services, was quoted in an article in "The Seattle Times" in July 2008 explaining how the air in the Bellagio casino is "turned" 12 times every hour making "the air in the casino many times cleaner than the outside air." The Bellagio has even tested technology designed to protect their staff; the Air Rail system creates a curtain of air protecting the dealer from the smokers at his table.

The MGM Grand has made all of its poker rooms and several gaming tables nonsmoking as well as provides the usual efficient air conditioning. You can also find smoke-free slot machines near the restaurant areas, which have to be nonsmoking by law. Although you cannot guarantee that someone with a lit cigarette will not come and sit next to you, the air here should be clearer to start with.
