Summerlin, a planned community close to Las Vegas, was developed by the Howard Hughes Corp. The community was settled in 1990, attracting residents to its scenic location and small-community lifestyle. Different construction companies have provided the homes for the community. Summerlin stretches over 22,500 acres and has lots of open space.
Hiking, biking and climbing are three popular activities at the Red Rock National Conservation Area, a few miles from Las Vegas and incorporating the Mojave Desert. The Visitor Center has information on the activities and the international interest in the area's wildlife and geology.
Climbing some of the rock formations is challenging, and climbers come from many countries. Loop trails for biking and hiking lead into the deepest canyons. The wildlife includes coyote, jackrabbit, scorpions and desert tortoise.

The Springs Preserve Culture Center promotes local culture and natural history through various means. An amphitheater presents music and dance performances and other events. The learning center hosts classes and exhibits in its galleries and museums. Botanical gardens are divided into specialisms, including the growing of roses, fruit, vegetables and herbs. Visitors learn about the flora and fauna of the Mohave Desert and how the center helps to preserve rare specimens. Cooking demonstrations show how herbs can be used. The Enabling Garden is designed for people with disabilities.
Trails are directed through natural habitats and the history of the Native Americans and European settlers is told. Early settlers' buildings are re-created and there are archeological digs. Future expansion is planned with the opening of the Nevada State Museum, which will house more historic artifacts and display information on the dinosaur population in the area.
