Make sure that you have all the necessary gear you need such as a mask, fins, goggles. Also make sure that your gear is undamaged. Ensure that your swim gear is designed for what you are doing such as dive gear, because you are not going into a pool, you are going into the ocean, and conditions there are less friendly.
Pick a good spot on the beach for you and your swim buddy to enter the water. When picking a spot on the beach to enter the water it is a good idea to look for a spot that has good recognizable landmarks north and south of your entry location. That way when you look back to shore you can reasonably pinpoint your location with regard to where you entered the ocean and you do not become disoriented or lost, and you will know where to exit the water when the time comes. North of the Sunglow Pier is usually the best spot, but just south of Ormond Beach and another great spot is in South Daytona Beach but north of the jetty.
If you are going to charter a boat for your dolphin experience it will have to be a private charter as there are no organized dolphin swim charter boats available. Most private charters will average about $500 a day or more. However the skippers of these boats generally do know where to locate dolphins. You will also need to have your scuba gear since these swims will be blue water (ocean) swims and in the dolphins' natural habitat.
Enter the water and don your swim gear. While looking for dolphins you really do not have to worry about finding them because if they are there they will find you.
