How to Swim With Dolphins in Cabo

A trip to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, can offer many experiences to visitors. It is a popular destination for those traveling to the Mexican Riviera, offering many ocean activities. Bottlenosed dolphins live in the waters offshore. One can easily see these creatures playing in the waters from the beach or from a boat. However, visitors can also experience the dolphins up close and personal at the Cabo Dolphin Center in Cabo San Lucas.

      Book your dolphin encounter with the Cabo Dolphin Center. Reservations can be made online or by phone. Choose one of the four different dolphin encounters that best suits you and your needs. These include a dolphin swim, trainer for a day, dolphin encounter and dolphin kids. Costs for these activities range from $80 for dolphin kids to $400 for trainer for a day programs, as of January 2011.

      Swim with the dolphins. Learn about dolphins directly from the trainers who work with them every day. Touch and interact with a dolphin and enter the water to take a swim with one. Do not use sunscreen as the chemicals are harmful to dolphins.

      This program familiarizes you with dolphins and gives you an unforgettable personal experience. The dolphin swim costs $167 and is available for ages 5 and older. All children between the ages of 5 and 10 must be accompanied by a paying adult. The entire program lasts one hour.

      Participate in the dolphin encounter. The dolphin encounter is available for all ages and swimming abilities. Trainers use dolphins to teach visitors about how they live. Visitors then enter the shallow water pool and can touch and feed the dolphins.

      Trainers teach some training hand signals so visitors can communicate with the creatures. The program costs $100 and lasts 30 minutes. Children ages 4 to 11 must have a paying adult present and children ages 1 to 3 are free when held by a parent.

      Register your child ages 4 to 9 for the dolphin kids program. Trainers introduce children to the dolphins, allowing the kids to touch the dolphins. Trainers stay close to the children when entering the shallow pool, while the kids can touch and hug the dolphins, as well as sing with them and feed them. All children receive some one-on-one time with the dolphins. The cost of this program is $80 per child.

      Help a dolphin trainer for the day. The trainer for a day program costs $400 per person and allows visitors to spend the day with a dolphin and its trainer. The trainer teaches you about the details of their job, from training the dolphins to feeding and caring for them.

      Visitors remain in close contact with the dolphins throughout the day, including helping out with the dolphin swim program. The program also includes lunch, trainer's uniform, diploma, a dolphin swim and a DVD and photo of your experience. Participants must be at least 12 years old and 53 inches tall.
