A variety of companies can help participants determine the best dolphin swim for their needs. RedBallon, for instance, arranges dolphin swims, and even advises on swimming-with-the-seals programs. Australian Traveler also makes dolphin swim arrangements and provides swim planning advice.
Most dolphin swim programs have limited space. Make an appointment if possible because spots fill quickly. Participants must be in good health and be strong swimmers. For the dolphins' safety, jewelry must be removed or taped. Participant who do not speak English must provide a translator (at their expense) who also must participate in the program. Age and height requirements vary by program. Programs usually run about 45 minutes.
Sea World, located in Main Beach, Queensland, offers three programs that are held in their dolphinarium. The adult program is for ages 14 and older; the children's program for ages 5-13. The third program is for families; children must be at least 5 years old. All children must meet height requirements, and are measured the day of the swim. Sea World provides wet suits, but bathing suits must be worn underneath.
Tangalooma Wild Dolphin Resort offers a different type of dolphin encounter sinc the dolphins involved are wild. Eleven dolphins frequent the area, and the staff members help guests into the sea with these magnificent creatures to hand feed them. Located on Moreton Island, Tangalooma is eco-certified, meaning it "is ecologically sustainable tourism with a primary focus on experiencing natural areas that fosters environmental and cultural understanding, appreciation and conservation," according to Ecotourism Australia.
