How to Swim with Dolphins in Marathon, Florida

If you would like to learn more about marine animals during your visit to the Florida Keys, visit the Dolphin Research Center and swim with dolphins. The center is in Marathon, Fla., and is about a 21/2-hour drive from Miami. In addition to a basic dolphin swim, the center offers other experiences, including painting with a dolphin or learning to be a trainer or dolphin researcher. You can also attend educational shows about the Atlantic bottlenose dolphins and California sea lons.

  1. How to Swim with Dolphins in Marathon, Florida

      Decide which dolphin experience program is the best fit for you and your family. The programs range from a 25-minute dolphin splash to a Trainer for the Day experience. Some packages have age restrictions. You also must have good command of the English language for some of the programs. Check the website for details and requirements of each program

      Reserve your dolphin experience by calling (305-289–0002. If you will be visiting in the summer or near a holiday, you should call at least two months before your visit. Note that reservations are only accepted by phone. This line is open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. EST, seven days a week. You will need a credit card to pay for your dolphin experience. You cannot get a refund or make changes to your program after you purchase it

      Prepare for your day at the Dolphin Research Center. You should arrive at the center with your bathing suit under your clothes. Note that you cannot wear jewelry when you swim with the dolphins.

      Arrive at the Dolphin Research Center on the day of your reservation. Pay your admission and go to the gift shop. Attend an orientation and sign a waiver.

      Explore the Dolphin Research Center. You can also watch dolphin and sea lion programs at the center.

      Meet your trainer at the designated time for your program. You will be escorted to the lagoon in small groups. If you are not a strong swimmer, ask for a life vest.

      Swim with the dolphins. Be sure to have someone take pictures. After you swim, you will be given a certificate.
