How to Determine Compass Direction in Reference to the Sun

If you are traveling by car or walking and need to know a quick idea of the direction you are traveling, you do not need a compass. You can look at the sun. The sun rises in the east and sets in the west. So if in the beginning of the day you travel toward the sun, you are heading east.

Instructions

    • 1

Find out what time it is. In the Northern Hemisphere, the sun usually reaches its peak around 3 p.m.

    • 2

Look to see if the sun is on your left, right, in front of you or behind you.

    • 3

Determine your direction. If it is before 3 p.m. and the sun is in front of you, you are heading east. If it is behind you, you are heading west. If it is to your left you are heading south. If it is to your right, you are heading north. If it is after 3 p.m. and the sun is in front of you, you are heading west. If it is behind you, you are heading east. If it is to your left, you are heading north. If it is to your right, you are heading south.
