Bermuda's official currency is the Bermuda dollar, but most places accept U.S. dollars as well. The exchange rate is one to one, and you can often get change in U.S. currency if you ask. Most establishments accept major credit cards. Check with your bank to be sure you will not be charged fees.
There is no sales tax in Bermuda, and prices are usually very competitive. U.S. Customs allows individuals to bring in $800 worth of items, including tobacco and alcohol, without having to pay a tax on these items. For members of the same household, this amount can be combined, and children are allowed the same exemption, excluding alcohol and tobacco.
The city of Hamilton offers the best selection of shopping, from department stores to boutiques, but St. Georges and the Royal Navy Dockyard also host a variety of shopping choices. The Bermuda Tourism website offers a listing of the major shops on the island, along with specialty and contact information. Shops often close early, around 5 p.m. or 6 p.m., depending on location.
Bermuda is known for cedar-wood items and, of course, Bermuda shorts. With the duty-free discount, many people also find that clothing and other goods from British companies are less expensive when purchased in Bermuda.
