How to Maximize the Volume of a Suitcase

Whether you are flying, driving or taking a train, packing a suitcase right before traveling can be one of the most stressful and exhausting aspects of a trip. With airlines charging fees for baggage, you may want to pack as lightly as possible. With the right planning and a small time investment, maximize the amount of suitcase space you have. In three steps, packing can go from being a high-stress situation to a low-maintenance task.

Instructions

    • 1

Pack basic clothes that can be worn multiple times depending on the occasion. Do not overpack. Check the weather and choose appropriate attire. Select items of clothing that you wear on an everyday basis. If it is a special occasion, choose an outfit beforehand and do not bring extras. Pack two pairs of shoes: one pair should be casual for walking and the other for evening wear.

    • 2

Organize all documentation and travel information, and place it in an area of the suitcase that is readily accessible.

    • 3

Roll outfits together and place them side by side or on top of one another to eliminate wasted space. Rolling outfits means placing an entire outfit together and tightly rolling the combination into a cylinder-like shape. Shoes packed in the suitcase can hold smaller items of clothing or toiletries inside them.

    • 4

Place clothing in the suitcase in the reverse order that you plan to wear it, so your first outfit will be on top, the second outfit the next one down, and so on -- you won't have to dig around the suitcase to find your clothing.

    • 5

Use the smaller or outer pockets of a suitcase to place toiletries and undergarments.
