Ensure you collect a P45 form from your employer when you leave your position. Ask your employer to provide one if you do not automatically receive one. Complete and detach parts two and three.
Visit the HM Revenue and Customs website. Type "P85" into the search bar at the top of the screen and click "Search." Select "P85 - Leaving the United Kingdom" from the search results.
Click the "P85" link on the P85 page if you are a UK resident looking to leave the UK for a long period, or permanently. Print the form.
Choose the link, "P85(S) Leaving the United Kingdom on completion of assignment," if you're a non-UK citizen who was working in the UK. Open the link and print the document.
Complete your chosen form. You will need your national insurance number and tax reference number. Both can be found on your HMRC statement of account, or on most payslips or tax office correspondence.
Write the name of your tax office in the box at the top of the application documents. Find the address on your payslip or tax account letters. Put your P85 or P85(S) form in an envelope, as well as parts two and three of your P45. Send to the office listed on the forms. HM Revenue and Customs will inform you of any tax refunds.
