Air conditioners are provided in Central Government offices as per the recommendations of the VI CPC. The entitlement and eligibility for using air conditioners in these offices are as follows:
Air Conditioners in Office Building:
- One air conditioner of one tonne capacity for chamber of the head of the office.
- One air conditioner of 2 or 2.5 tonne capacity for offices comprising 15 or more non-gazetted government officers.
- If due to the presence of large number of computers, printers, copiers, etc., the heat load exceeds the general guidelines in the office, an additional air conditioner may be provided.
- In cities/regions with extremely hot climate, the capacity of air conditioners may be increased by one step beyond the specified entitlement mentioned above.
- The decision to provide air conditioners may be taken by the competent disciplinary authority concerned.
Office Buildings and Residential Complexes:
In office buildings and residential complexes, the following provisions apply:
- Type I cities (Extremely Hot Climate): Air conditioners with a capacity of 1.5 tonne for bedrooms, and 2 tonne for drawing/dining room.
- Type II cities (Hot Climate): Air conditioners with a capacity of 1 tonne for bedrooms, and 1.5 tonne for drawing/dining room.
- Type III cities (Cool Climate): Air conditioners with a capacity of 1 tonne for the entire flat.
- Type IV cities (Cold Climate): Air conditioners are not usually provided, except in very rare and exceptional circumstances.
- Additional air conditioners may be provided in offices and residential complexes for special or specific reasons, such as health requirements of the occupant, etc., based on the approval of a committee headed by the Secretary of the Ministry/Department.
