How to Take a Laptop Through Customs

Searching your computer’s laptop has been ruled “permissible without probable cause or a search warrant under the border search doctrine” by a U.S. federal appeals court, meaning that learning how to safely transport your laptop is vital. According to cnet, customs officials can hold laptops for weeks without reason. Safely getting your laptop through customs requires extreme precaution, but the best policy is to securely delete anything that may cause a problem. While you may not be in for serious legal trouble, hiding sensitive documents is important for many business travelers and privacy-conscious citizens.

Instructions

    • 1

Delete anything that is likely to cause a problem. Use a free file eraser program such as File Shredder, Eraser or File Eraser to completely remove the files from your computer. Anything that could be construed as pornography should be removed, along with any sensitive information about clients or your business which is no longer required. Delete anything that customs could have any reason to mistrust.

    • 2

Delete your browsing history, cache and the cookies. Access your web browser’s main menu and go to “History.” Open Internet Explorer and press “Ctrl+Shift+Del” together. Click all of the tick boxes to select everything to be deleted. Uncheck the tick under “Preserve Favorites Website Data,” to get rid of everything. Click “Delete” at the bottom of the pop-up to remove.

    • 3

Move anything you require onto a storage device. Camera SD cards are suitable for this, and often come with large memory capacity. Move any files onto it, using “Cut” and “Paste” as opposed to “Copy” and “Paste,” and place the SD card in your camera. While there is still some danger of agents searching it, it is less likely than having your laptop searched. You can also often use USB sticks or even portable music devices.

    • 4

Encrypt any data you have on a remote storage device using a file encryption program. Use a free program such as TrueCrypt, Folder Lock or Kaka Folder Protector to encrypt the files. This is unlikely to keep customs officers out for too long, but can protect your data if it gets lost. You can also use these programs to create a hidden encrypted area on your hard drive, but if customs agents notice it, it is likely to cause you more problems.

    • 5

Transfer files over the Internet if you want to be sure your sensitive information gets across. Use websites such as A Drive, 4 Shared and HiDrive to transport your files. Take extra care deleting your Internet cookies and history if you use this option. You need to be certain that no passwords or data relating to that website can be found.

Comply as much as possible if you get stopped. Even though arguing is natural, you are only going to create problems for yourself if your laptop is being searched. Help them as much as possible, and hopefully you will get your laptop back quickly. If you don’t have anything to hide, you needn’t be concerned. Shouting at customs officers is unlikely to put them in a reasonable mood.
