Instructions

    • 1

Stay quiet and calm. Everybody going through U.S. customs is required to speak to a customs officer at least briefly. Turn off any cell phones, music players, radios or other distracting devices as you approach the customs officer.

    • 2

Make sure to have all necessary documents readily available. These include government-issued photo ID like a driver's license or ID card plus proof of citizenship like birth certificate, passport or citizen card where applicable.

    • 3

Avoid carrying forbidden items like fresh meat, fruit and vegetables from abroad into the U.S. You should also avoid carrying soil from abroad into the U.S., including soil that may be on your shoes from just walking around.

    • 4

Be prepared to declare the value of all items purchased abroad. You can prepare for this step by keeping a list of the value of purchased items as you shop.

    • 5

Carry proof of purchase for expensive items like snow machines, skis and cameras or register them with U.S. customs on your way out of the United States if you plan on returning with them.

    • 6

Leave all your weapons behind. If you must carry them, make sure to declare them.
