Arrange travel plans and research the destinations you will visit (the Internet is a good source for this information). Find out whether you need prior authorization to visit the country, any documents outside of a passport and what may be considered contraband at customs. This can regularly be found on the country's immigration website.
Gather any required documents. These documents may include health, criminal and driving histories. Apply for a pre-travel visa online or with the nearest consulate if required.
Pack your luggage respecting the laws of the country you will visit. Do not include pharmaceuticals that may be considered contraband. Generally, other countries do not allow produce, animals or soil from another country through customs.
Travel to the border or airport of the foreign country. Fill out the required paperwork --- keep in mind that providing false information, knowingly or not, is grounds for deportation. Fill out the paper work truthfully and carefully.
Present yourself, your documents, including passport and your luggage, to the customs official. Answer any questions truthfully and cooperate fully. Pay for a visa on arrival if required.
Submit to a search if requested. Follow the customs official to an interview room and answer questions truthfully if requested. Gather your belongings after being dismissed by the customs official and cross the border to the country you are traveling to.
