How to Address an Envelope to a Different Country

Addressing an envelope to a location in a different country is not always as simple as writing the name of the country in question below the address. Other countries tend to have completely different systems, and the address may not contain familiar elements such as a state, zip code or even a numbered street address. Follow a few simple guidelines to help ensure your envelope makes its way safely to its foreign destination.

Instructions

    • 1

Write the name of the person to whom you wish to send the envelope first, near the center of the envelope. This is consistent regardless of the country to which you are sending the envelope.

    • 2

Write down the rest of the address exactly as it was provided to you. Other countries use very different formats for their addresses. Some countries, or some parts of countries, might not have street addresses. Instead, you might need to simply address the envelope to the person in question and list the nearest town or small region. Other countries might have their own versions of zip codes that look very different from those in the United States. Yet other countries might require very detailed addresses including numbered street address, settlement name, district name and region name.

    • 3

Write the name of the country to which you are sending the envelope below the rest of the address.

    • 4

Include your name and return address in the upper-left-hand corner of the envelope. Write "USA" or "United States" below the last line of your address.
