Normally, you are allowed only up to 3.4 ounces (100 millileters) of a liquid in your carry-on luggage. If you are traveling with an infant, you are allowed to take more than 3.4 ounces of breast milk, formula or liquid medicine. These all must be inspected by a TSA agent, though. To expedite the situation, it is best to place the liquids in one of the provided plastic bins and inform the agent of what they are before they pass through the X-ray machine.
All strollers and car seats should be passed through the X-ray machine. Secure any items that may be inside them and fold the stroller. Place each item on the conveyor belt and wait for it to go through. If an item is too large to go through, a TSA agent can inspect it separately. Diaper bags, toys and other baby items also must go through the X-ray machine. If you have a lot of items and need help picking them up again, feel free to ask an agent for assistance.
Take your infant out of her stroller or carrier and carry her with you through the metal detector. If nothing beeps, you should be free to go. However, if the metal detector is set off when you pass through, both you and the baby must be inspected separately. If you carried the baby in a sling, you may be subject to further inspection, even if the alarm doesn't sound. Do not pass the baby to another person or the TSA agent while walking through. You must hold the infant yourself.
If you feel like any of the TSA rules regarding newborns were not followed or had an issue with a security agent, you can file a complaint with the TSA. Contact the agency online using the TSA Contact Form on the agency's official website (see Resources). Make sure you note the date, time, name and ID number of the agent about whom you have a complaint. Once you have submitted the form with this info, a TSA agent should be in contact with you.
