Heathrow Airport Hand Luggage Rules

London's Heathrow Airport is one of the busiest air travel terminals in the world. If you're traveling to or through Heathrow anytime soon, you can make your transit much smoother by ensuring that your carry-on luggage meets the airport's requirements. However, carry-on restrictions vary from airline to airline, so don't forget to read the restrictions for your specific carrier before departure too.
  1. Hand Luggage

    • You are allowed to carry more than one piece of hand luggage through Heathrow security. However, not all airlines will allow you to bring more than one piece of hand luggage on board the aircraft, so you should check with you airline before packing. Also note that the dimensions and weight allowance for hand luggage differ from airline to airline. For most airlines, cabin baggage must be not larger than 22 inches by 17.7 inches by 10 inches. Musical instruments that are larger than this dimension might be allowed as a second carry-on item, but you will need to make special arrangements with your airline. Laptop bags are counted as a second carry-on. Pushchairs, walking aids and wheelchairs are allowed onboard.

    Liquids and Restrictions

    • If you are carrying any liquids, lotions, pastes, creams of foam-based cosmetics, they must be stored in containers that are no larger than 100 milliliters. The containers will have to be packed in a single, transparent, re-sealable plastic bag. In total, the bag should not contain more than 1 liter of fluids. Essential medicines, baby food and milk that exceed 100 milliliter may be carried onboard, but these will be subjected to authentication at the security checkpoint.Prohibited items include scissors, knives, tweezers, knitting needles, razor blades, nail clippers and other sharp objects, toy guns, household cutlery, catapults and slingshots, darts, sporting bats and hypodermic needles (except for medical reasons). All flammable liquids, gases and solids, organic peroxides, oxidizers, gas cylinders, wet car cell batteries, infectious substances, magnetrons, fireworks, paints, thinners, poisons, acids, radioactive materials, creosote, quicklime, non-safety matches and fire lighters are not allowed.

    Duty Free Purchases & Gifts

    • Liquid items larger than 100 milliliter bought after the departure lounge security check will be allowed onboard your flight. You will be given your duty free purchase in a special sealed bag, which you are not permitted to unseal until you have arrived at your final destination. You should retain your proof of purchase of these items, as you may need to show it at a transfer point. Wrapped presents can be subjected to security check, so it is best to leave your gifts unwrapped in your hand luggage.
