How to Minimize Overseas Debit Card Fees

You are charged a fee when you use any ATM machine--within or outside of the United States--that uses a bank that is different from the one you received your debit card from. After a vacation or business trip overseas, the last thing you want is to be bogged down by a mountain of fees on your debit card. You can minimize these fees by keeping a few suggestions in mind.

Instructions

    • 1

Look for and only withdraw cash from ATM machines that are affiliated with the bank from which your debit card is attached. Using bank-specific machines minimizes the number of service and transaction fees on your debit card. If your financial institution does not have ATM locations at your overseas destination, apply for a debit card from a bank that does have ATMs where you are headed.

    • 2

Use your debit card to exchange currencies in foreign countries. If you use your credit card to do this, you will be charged a currency conversion fee, in addition to monthly service and financial charges as you work to pay off your balance in the coming months.

    • 3

Withdraw money from your debit card in large amounts when you need cash. Limiting the number of withdrawals will significantly minimize individual fee amounts accrued each time you use your debit card.
