Homemade Snacks for Airplane Trips

Use up household grocery items that are sure to perish while you are out of town to craft homemade snacks appropriate for airplane travel. Pack goods in throw-away plastic containers or baggies, disposing after initial use to free up space in luggage. Set aside time to prepare or cook snacks the day or evening prior to travel. Keep snacks organized and easily accessible by using an insulated lunch bag. Pack them with a small ice pack if applicable.
  1. Nature's Candy

    • Pack various sweet treats in carry-on luggage and surprise kids or travel mates mid-flight. Natural sugars add a boost of energy when enjoyed in appropriate amounts. Grapes, apples, oranges and bananas are all applicable options. Immediately prior to packing, cut up fruits in small pieces if necessary. Strawberries, pineapples and raspberries also travel well. If time permits, prepare a fruit salad complete with a dressing or sauce and allow it to refrigerate overnight. Pack items into paper cups with lids, and dispose of containers after using them to free luggage space.

    Granola Bars and Trail Mix

    • Spend some quality time with kids in the kitchen prior to heading to the airport and allow them to offer input for their favorite ingredients to granola bars. Several recipes are available and offer varying levels of natural or processed sugar additives. Add dried fruit, chocolate chips or raisins into grain bars for added flavor. Another option is to combine raisins, chocolate chips, marshmallows, peanuts, candy coated pieces such as Reese's or M&M's pieces, cashews and shelled sunflower seeds in baggies.

    Protein

    • Solve two problems at once by taking advantage of items already in your refrigerator that will perish if not used within a specific period of time. Chicken, turkey and pork are all meats that require minimal preparation, can be quickly seasoned and easily cooked. Cut meat into small pieces so you can enjoy it without needing utensils if necessary. Boil eggs and de-shell them at home to avoid messes on the plane. Baggies filled with peanuts or scoops of peanut butter also make a good protein fix.

    Pasta

    • Help young kids feel comfortable on the airplane by serving them a snack that reminds them of a home-cooked meal. Pasta noodles are easy to prepare and store and can be eaten cold or briefly heated in the aircraft microwave. On the night prior to travel, boil noodles, strain them and add butter, Parmesan cheese and desired spices, such as one of the Mrs. Dash options, then refrigerate in small travel containers. Use colored or specialty-shape noodles to help entertain younger kids in-flight.
