Trip-planning software can include street and topographical maps, the ability to import maps, route generation, and turn-by-turn directions. Some programs offer voice navigation and multiple languages.
For functionality, programs offer map customization, GPS transfer compatibility, multiple search functions--including keyword and ZIP code searches--plus compatibility with different platforms, from PC to PDA, and with Windows and Macintosh operating systems.
The website TopTenReviews lists many map software options. Brands include Back Roads Explorer, ExpertGPS, Fugawi Global Navigator and Map of America, MapSend TOPO 3D, Microsoft Streets and Trips, Street Atlas USA and Trimble Adventure Planner. Prices range from about $40 to several hundred dollars, as of September 2010.
Global Positioning System (GPS) products frequently offer their own software applications. The Tomtom Maps of USA & Canada DVD, for example, is designed for use with Tomtom's products. Handmark makes applications for PDAs, including Deluxeware's Travel Deluxe for Palm OS. For the iPhone, Allstays sells iExit, which includes a database of restaurants, hotels and major retailers at exits along U.S. highways.
