How to Learn Spoken German

If you want to interact with German-speaking people, you will need to learn how to understand and speak the language. At first this may seem difficult, even if you already have a large German vocabulary and can read in German. Comprehending a language when it is spoken and being able to communicate in the language, is a different skill from reading or writing it. With practice, however, you can learn spoken German.

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase German language audio CDs and listen to them every day. Choose those that contain dialogues between native speakers and have pauses where you can practice responses.

    • 2

Find a German conversation partner. If you live near a university, you can inquire there to see if any German-speaking foreign students would be willing to act as a conversation partner. If not, you may wish to post an ad in your local newspaper.

    • 3

Watch German television online as often as you can. Several stations provide video content of German programs. Watching and listening to German television will help you become accustomed to the rhythm and sound of the language -- this is especially helpful if you are unable to find a conversation partner.

    • 4

Record yourself speaking German phrases. Listen to check your pronunciation. Do this as often as you can. The more you speak the language, the faster you will get used to speaking it and the more confident you will become with it.
