How to Calculate Distance Point to Point

Calculating the distance between two points on a map measures the shortest distance over the earth’s surface. This is referred to as the “As the Crow Flies” calculation. The math involved for this computation becomes complicated. That is why the Internet comes in handy. Several websites provide calculators that will do the heavy lifting for you. You have two choices. You can pick out the locations on an interactive map or enter the map coordinates. Both ways will give you an accurate measurement.

Instructions

  1. Map

    • 1

Open the website for Google maps in a browser window.

    • 2

Click on the continent of your first point. So if you are starting in New York City, you would click on North America.

    • 3

Click the “+” sign to zoom in on the continent.

    • 4

Move to the menu located under the map. Click the “Clear Map” button. This will give you a clean slate by removing any points that were marked erroneously.

    • 5

Locate your first point and click on the city name. For instance, if your starting point is New York City, find it on the map and click. You will see a red balloon appear to pinpoint the spot.

    • 6

Find the second point on the map. You can use the navigation tools to the right to zoom in and zoom out. Click on an area of the map and drag it to move to different sections. Once you locate the city, click to establish the second point.

    • 7

Scroll down towards the bottom of the map. You will see a text box that states the number of miles between the two points.

    Coordinates

    • 8

Open the Movable Type website on your computer.
