How to Label a Map Legend Key

An essential part of any map is the map legend or key. A map legend is similar to the answer key on an exam; the legend contains all the icons and objects used on the map plus a label explaining what they mean. These labels in map legends are very important to understanding what the icons on the map itself represent. If you made a map and are adding a legend, the final step in completing your map is labeling the legend.

Instructions

    • 1

Review the entire map and take note of each icon or object you used in the map. An icon would be something like an “H” to signify a hospital or a “C” to signify a campground. An object would actually by part of the topography, such as a street, river, mountain or railroad track.

    • 2

Draw a copy of each icon and object into an unused area to create a legend. Leave enough room for two or three words next to each icon and object. You are now ready to label your map legend.

    • 3

Write a concise and short sentence fragment next to each icon and object in the map legend. As an example, write “River” next to the object you use to signify rivers on your map or write “Bridge” next to the icon you use to signify a bridge on your map.
