How to Use a Manual Compass

The compass is an old invention, but it finds its use in the field of navigation even today. A compass consists of a bezel on which an arrow points towards the magnetic north. A compass makes it simple to physically locate the objects shown on a map. Before using the navigational item, make sure the compass north is aligned with the north of the map. After aligning the north, you can easily determine the direction in which a feature given on the map is actually located in your surroundings.

Instructions

    • 1

Align the north of the map with the compass north. On a map, the parallel lines originating from the bottom of the map and heading all the way to the top point towards the north. Place the compass on the map. The arrow on the bezel will point towards the compass north. Rotate the map underneath the compass until the straight lines on the map are parallel to the direction of north pointed by the arrow on the compass.

    • 2

Determine the bearing of a point given on the map. Draw a line on the map originating from the point you are currently located at, to the point that you want to reach. Draw another line originating from the same point and heading parallel to north of the map. Use a protractor to determine the angle between these lines.

    • 3

Find the direction of the point on the actual ground. Hold the compass in your hand. Face the direction in which the arrow on the compass points. Assuming that the angle that you calculated in Step 2 is 30 degrees, read the bearings given on the map and point your hand in the direction 30 degrees from the compass north. This is the direction in which the point on the map is actually located on the ground.
