Mark the two spots on your map that you want to use to set the compass bearing. One should be where you currently are and the other is where you want to go.
Place the length of your compass between the two points that you want to use to set the compass bearing.
Look at the direction of travel arrow on the compass. Look which way it's pointing. If the direction of travel arrow does not point the way you want to go on the map, or from where you are to where you want to go, then you need to turn the compass around.
Hold onto the baseplate of your compass, and then use the other hand to turn the wheel of the compass. You want the red lines within the wheel to point toward the top of your map, or toward north on the map.
Look at the grid lines on the map through the compass wheel. These run from north to south on the map. The compass lines need to be parallel to the grid lines. Adjust the compass as needed.
Pick up the compass and look at it. Hold it from the bottom and put it in front of you. The magnetic needle within the compass wheel needs to be aligned with the arrow painted on the compass. Move around until these areas are aligned. As you move, the magnetic arrow will also move. Once these areas are aligned, you have set the compass bearing, and this is the direction you need to travel to get to your destination you chose.
