How to Use a Lenstatic Compass

A lenstatic compass is a device generally used by the military because it accurately tells the direction a person is going in and is great for directing artillery fire. The bearing reads degrees and miles, which are the two most common notations. Using a lenstatic compass takes practice, especially so you can use it quickly.

Instructions

    • 1

Open up the lens cover halfway so it makes a 90-degree angle with the lens and the compass wheel and dial underneath. There will be a hole in the cover that acts as a sighting slot.

    • 2

Pull down the thumb hook toward the front of the compass and place your thumb inside to stabilize the compass. This will give you a more accurate reading.

    • 3

Locate the object you want to target and hold the compass out in front of you.

    • 4

Raise the end closest to you containing the sighting wire so that the object you are looking at falls in the middle of the sighting slot and is bisected by the sighting wire. This makes sure that the compass will accurately read the bearings of the target.

    • 5

Read the bearing on the compass and mark it down in miles or degrees, whichever you are more comfortable with. Even when you can't see the target, as long as you move at that bearing, you will be moving toward it.
