How to Use SmartStraps

The SmartStraps corporation boasts of manufacturing simple to use, practical and reliable tie down products. Their products vary in tie down method, but all are, as the company claims, straightforward to use. The tie downs come in three variations -- the standard ratchet, the cambuckle and the retractable tie down. With a bit of instruction you'll be able to tie down any load to the roof of a vehicle or trailer with SmartStraps in just a few minutes.

Instructions

  1. Standard Ratchet Tie Down

    • 1

Position the load onto the roof of your car or trailer so that it rests in a centered position with the weight evenly distributed.

    • 2

Feed the webbing through the small slot in the ratchet's axle, then pull the strap tight.

    • 3

Hook the tie down straps to the anchor points and position the straps over the top of the load.

    • 4

Pump the ratchet handle until the straps are tight and the load has no movement.

    • 5

Close the ratchet handle by pulling it down towards the anchor point.

    • 6

Open the handle fully by pushing the handle away from the anchor point as far as possible, and pull on the webbing to loosen the straps.

    Cambuckel Tie Down

    • 7

Arrange the load you are wishing to transport in the center of your car roof or trailer, distributing the weight as evenly as possible.

    • 8

Push down the cambuckle lever and feed the webbing up and out the cambuckle mouth. Pull a few feet of webbing through and release the cambuckle lever.

    • 9

Secure the hooks to the tie down points. Push down on the cambuckle lever and pull the webbing tight until there's no movement in the load.

    • 10

Tie off the loose strand of webbing to prevent it from flapping in the wind. This portion of webbing isn't supporting the load, so any simple knot will do.

    • 11

Untie the loose webbing, press the cambuckle lever and pull the webbing loose to relieve tension once the load has been successfully transported.

    Retractable Tie Down

    • 12

Distribute the load evenly across the center of your car or trailer roof.

    • 13

Open the ratchet handle 180 degrees, press the release lever found next to where the webbing feeds into the axle and pull the webbing to uncoil the straps.

    • 14

Fasten the hooks to the anchor points and pump the ratchet until the webbing is tight. Close the ratchet by pulling the handle down towards the lowest anchor point.

    • 15

Open the ratchet 180 degrees, press the release lever and pull the webbing loose to relieve tension once the load has been transported.
