Fill the humidification disc with distilled water by soaking it, submerged, in a shallow glass. After about 30 minutes it will be filled to an optimum level. This is an important step. If the humidification unit is too damp, the latches will swell; if it is too dry, the latches will be looser and prone to opening accidentally.
Place the case on its bottom on a flat surface. It is more difficult to open the lid if the humidor is on its side or while you are holding it by hand; it also increases the risk of your cigars falling out of the case as you open it. The humidor could also "pop" if you apply too much force, damaging the cigars.
Press down on the lid, directly on the top of the humidor, applying extra pressure to either latch. The humidor is strong enough to protect the cigars despite the added pressure. Compressing the plastic lid makes it easier to open the latch.
Flip open the latch gently and relieve the pressure. Then press down lightly over the remaining latch and open it. You can now easily release the humidor's latches without damaging your hands or your cigars.
