Directions to Unlock a Combination Lock

Various types of combination locks provide ways of securing your luggage while you travel or protecting your belongings inside a locker or briefcase. Single-dial locks are commonly used to secure high-school lockers and are opened by turning the dial to the various numbers in the combination. Multiple-dial locks are opened by turning each dial to the correct number in the combination. These locks are usually found on briefcases and some padlocks.

Instructions

  1. Unlock A Single-Dial Lock

    • 1

Rotate through the numbers so "0" is lined up with the marker at the top of the dial.

    • 2

Turn the dial clockwise through three rotations so "0" is lined up with the marker again.

    • 3

Turn the dial clockwise until the first number of your combination is lined up with the marker.

    • 4

Turn the dial counterclockwise past your second number, lining it up with the marker on the second pass.

    • 5

Spin the dial clockwise until your final number is lined up with the marker. The lock springs open when you have entered the correct code.

    Unlock A Multiple-Dial Lock

    • 6

Spin the left-most dial so the first number of your combination is facing forward.

    • 7

Move the second, third and fourth dial, moving left to right, so the second, third and forth numbers of your combination are facing forward.

    • 8

Slide the lever next to the numbers to the right. The latch flips open when the dials are showing the correct combination.
