For tropical cruises, pack appropriate beach or pool wear. Begin with bathing suits, cover-ups and flip-flops and determine how many days you will be cruising. For casual meals aboard the ship, women will need sundresses, Capri pants and shirts. Men will need khaki dress pants, polo shirts and/or buttoned shirts. You also might want to pack a light sweater or wrap for evenings. Also pack appropriate gear for shore activities, including hiking gear, exercise gear, socks and tennis shoes. For cool weather cruises take along a jacket, sweaters and long pants. You'll also need undergarments.
Even short cruises have formal dress dinners. Women will need long gowns and cocktail dresses. Evening bags, dress shoes, formal jewelry and an optional evening wrap should also be considered for formal nights. Men should pack a suit, dress shoes, long-sleeved shirts and ties.
Check with your cruise line to see what, if any, toiletries will be in your stateroom. Cruise ships usually provide toothpaste, soap, shampoo and conditioner for guests. You'll need razors, toothbrushes, deodorant, mouthwash and lotion. Pack your hair dryer, flat iron and curling iron as needed. Sunscreen, hats and sunglasses are important to prevent sun damage to your skin. Don't forget contact lenses, contact cleaner, prescription glasses, medications, makeup, brushes and feminine items. Other packing accessories include cameras, film, camera battery chargers, video cameras, handbags, beach bags and your cell phone charger. Cash, credit/debit cards and traveler's checks should be packed in your wallet or purse. Don't forget to pack your passport, cruise documents and photo identification on your person.
