List of Only Necessary Camping Equipment

Camping is an enjoyable outdoor recreational activity, provided you have all the necessary equipment to ensure your safety and comfort. Overpacking can turn a pleasant camping trip into a nightmare if you have to walk long distances. A trip to the camping supply store can be overwhelming for the beginning camper, because there is so much equipment from which to choose. If you plan to camp, however, you should never be without certain necessary gear items.
  1. Sleeping Bag

    • A sleeping bag keeps you warm at night so you can sleep comfortably when the temperature drops. Temperatures are colder at night than during the day in almost every climate in the world. Unless you plan to camp in subzero mountain climates, a standard sleeping bag is usually all you need.

    Sleeping Pad

    • Many beginner campers make the mistake of not bringing this essential item. Although sleeping bags do provide decent levels of padding and comfort, sleeping pads create a barrier between your body and the cold, lumpy ground underneath. The ground loses a lot of heat at night, and without something between you (in your sleeping bag) and the ground, your sleeping bag will not keep you as warm as it could. Purchase a cheap, foam sleeping pad; you may also opt for a pricier inflatable mat.

    Tent

    • A lot of new campers like to imagine themselves sleeping under the stars, but this is not always safe or comfortable to do. A tent is an absolutely necessary camping item because it provides shelter and safety from foul weather, cold winds and animals. Tents are not bear-proof, however; if you plan to stay in bear country, be sure to remove all food and odorous items from your tent. Choose a tent that will provide plenty of room for you and your gear, because sometimes you will need to bring everything inside if it is raining.

    Appropriate Clothing

    • Do not skimp on clothes just because it is sunny and warm when you pack your bag. Weather can change from pleasant to horrible in just a few minutes, especially in the mountains. Always pack a rain jacket, a warm sweater or pullover, gloves, a winter hat and thick socks, just in case. You also never know what the weather is going to be like at night, and getting a good night’s sleep is really important when camping.

    Pocketknife

    • A pocketknife is incredibly useful when camping. You do not need a deluxe Swiss army knife—just something simple with a few blades, a screwdriver, corkscrew, scissors and other basic tools. A pocketknife can be used to chop and prepare food; it can also serve as an eating utensil.

    Flashlight or Headlamp

    • A flashlight or headlamp is an essential piece of equipment. If you need to exit your tent in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom, having a flashlight or headlamp will prevent you from stepping on hazardous objects or falling into a body of water. Headlamps are preferable because you can perform tasks with your hands—such as cook or make a fire—while wearing one.
