How to Make Your Own Garment Bag

Suitcases are bulky and take up much needed room in a car trunk. Packing heavy garments such as wool coats, fur-lined parkas and heavy knit sweaters can take up one or two large suitcases by themselves. When traveling to a colder climate, or driving to the ski resorts, bundling your heavy articles of clothing on one hanger creates a protective garment bag and is a great space-saving method of packing.

Instructions

    • 1
      Sleeveless dresses hung first

Hang sleeveless, delicate articles of clothing, such as dress or evening wear, on the hanger first.

    • 2

Hang the next garment onto the hanger, over the first.

    • 3

Hang the third garment over the first, and pull the sleeves of the previous article into this one. Continue hanging the clothing on the same, heavy wooden hanger, pulling the sleeves of the previous garment into the newly hung garment.

    • 4

Hang the heaviest, bulkiest garment over all the others. These include such items as overcoats, raincoats, or heavy sweaters. Do not tuck the sleeves of the previous garments into this last item. Instead, pull the sleeves within, leaving about 4" at the shoulders to allow this outermost article to hang over the hanger and the previous items of clothing. Zip, button or otherwise fasten this last bulky coat or sweater all the way. This last outer article of clothing provides protection for all the others under it.

    • 5

Slip a lawn and leaf bag over the entire hanger with the opening of the bag at the bottom. Make a small hole in the center of the bottom of the lawn and leaf bag with scissors, allowing the hook of the hanger to poke through for easy handling. The entire hanger of packed clothing can now be laid flat on the back seat of the car or over suitcases in the trunk, taking up very little space.
