Worldwide Adapters Vs Electrical Transformers

If you travel to another country and want to take along electrical devices, ensure that they conform with that country's electrical system. Options include 110 or 220 volts and the type of pins on the plugs.
  1. Adapter Plugs and Pins

    • You can buy worldwide adapters to fit any type of plug in the world, but the adapter may only make the plug fit. You may also need a transformer to change the voltage.

    Changing the Voltage

    • Some brands of worldwide adapters have a transformer built in to change the voltage and can be used in low-power applications. For higher power, though, you need a separate transformer.

    Lower Power Appliances

    • Low-power appliance include electric razors, radios, clocks and battery chargers for cellphones or music players. Caution: Hair dryers are not low-power appliances.

    Higher Power Appliances

    • Higher power appliances include stereo systems, computers, hair dryers, lights, refrigerators (even small ones) and anything that produces heat, such as toasters. You need a separate transformer to operate these.

    Worldwide AC/DC Adapters

    • Many AC/DC adapters work on either 110 or 220 volts for low-power appliances. If an appliance's label says something such as 100 to 250 vac, it will work on either voltage, and you need only an adapter to make the plug fit. You do not need a transformer.

    Transformers

    • Transformers change 110 to 220 volt or 220 to 110 volt, depending on the direction they are hooked up. Either side of a transformer can plug into either voltage and change it to the other, with the correct plug and socket.
