Instructions

    • 1

Make a list a week before travel of all the items you need to pack. Edit and add to this list throughout the week. Write out the final list as a checklist to aid your packing.

    • 2

Place all the items you intend to pack in a pile beside the suitcase, following your checklist closely. Pack items that are temperature appropriate and of a similar color theme so that you can mix and match items to create outfits. In general it's wise to pack one shirt per travel day with one pair of bottoms per every two travel days.

    • 3

Roll garments made of wrinkle-resistant materials and place them at the bottom of the suitcase. These materials include soft cotton and denim.

    • 4

Fold garments that are prone to wrinkles and place them on top of the rolled items. These garments include stiff cotton shirts, blazers and dresses.

    • 5

Place garment bags between the layers of packed clothing to protect against wrinkling and creasing of the garments.

    • 6

Place toiletries in a small toiletry bag and place the bag the into inner or outer pockets of the suitcase. If not checking your suitcase, make sure to only pack the Transportation Security Administration's allowed amount of liquids, gels and aerosols. Purchase travel-size toiletries or pour items such as lotion or hair products into smaller bottles.

    • 7

Place jewelry inside resealable plastic bags or pillboxes and place this item in areas between clothing. Wear fine jewelry in case your bag is lost.

    • 8

Place small items, such as books, undergarments or socks in areas between clothing or inside inner or outer pockets.

    • 9

Place shoes in outside pockets or on the sides of your suitcase. Pack only three pairs of shoes that qualify as casual flats, sneakers and a fancier pair of shoes for evening.
