How to Properly Pack Your Suitcase for a Trip

The goal when packing a suitcase is to fit as much as possible into a small space. Being able to pack efficiently is an especially important skill in this day and age, with airlines charging higher and higher fees for checked baggage. Luckily, once you learn how to arrange things, you should have no problem at all fitting all of the clothing, shoes and personal care items you need for your trip into one suitcase.

Instructions

    • 1

Pack a maximum of two pairs of shoes. Utilize the space inside the shoes by stuffing them with smaller items such as electronics chargers and sunglasses, then place the shoes along the sides of the suitcase.

    • 2

Roll up soft items such as underwear, socks, T-shirts and jeans. Place these rolled items into the bottom of the suitcase, then tuck small items like a belt into the area around the perimeter of the rolled clothing.

    • 3

Fold your stiffer items, including dress shirts, slacks and blazers. Place them on top of the rolled items, alternating their direction so that the collar of one shirt is underneath the hem of the one on top of it. This will prevent one side from getting too bulky.

    • 4

Pack only the toiletries that are absolutely essential. Most hotels offer shampoo, soap and hair dryers, eliminating the need for you to pack these items. Place toiletries into sealable plastic bags so that they won't damage your other items if a leak occurs. Tuck these bags into the corners of the suitcase or place them in zippered pockets.
