How to Check Passport Renewal Status

The U.S. Department of State requires passport holders to renew their passport every 10 years. The Department requires you fill out a renewal form, pay the appropriate fees and provide new passport photos in order to do so. You can do this yourself or you can go to your local passport acceptance facility and have someone there mail your application for you. Typically, it takes six to eight weeks to receive a new passport. Expediting your passport requires an additional fee but it gets your passport to you in two to three weeks. If you want to check the status of your application, you can do so online.

Instructions

    • 1

Log on to the U.S. Department of State website to check the status of passports, both new and renewals (travel.state.gov).

    • 2

Locate the "Application Status" link and click on it. From here, you must enter your last name, the last four digits in your social security number and your date of birth.

    • 3

You may view your passport application results at this site. If no results appear, it could mean that you have tried to check the status of your application renewal too soon. The U.S. Department of State does not provide application status results for up to a week after a renewal application is submitted.
