How to Make a Nice Passport Photo

There is a requirement that all U.S. passport applications must have a photo attached to them. However, you do not have to take this photo at the passport agency. As long as the photo meets certain requirements, it can be used as your passport photo. Before submitting your application to the appropriate agency you must make sure that your photo meets the requirements spelled out by the U.S. Department of State.

Instructions

    • 1

Prepare the shooting area. The U.S. Department of State suggests that you place the camera at eye level, four feet away from the subject. Additionally, you should light the front area from both sides with an additional light behind the subject facing up. Finally, the shooting area should have a neutral color backdrop.

    • 2

Make your subject comfortable. People hate taking identification photos, so put them at ease by telling them they do not have to worry about smiling or posing. Give them a minute to compose themselves and then have them look directly at the camera. Remember -- take the picture at eye level.

    • 3

Print the picture on thin photo stock. The picture should measure 2 by 2- inches and show the subject from the neck up. Do not, by any means enhance the photo for aesthetic purposes.
