Which Islands Can Be Visited Without a Passport?

Passports are required for international travel, even to the Caribbean. Alternatives to a passport are available to U.S. residents traveling to Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean and Bermuda by land or sea. Passport cards can be obtained for this type of travel, but the only way to visit any of these countries by air is with a valid United States Passport. Passports are not required to travel to the U.S. territories.
  1. U.S. Virgin Islands

    • St. Croix, St. Thomas and St. John make up the U.S. Virgin Islands. United States residents traveling by air or sea do not need a U.S. passport to visit. These islands are all U.S. territories and you can fly or sail into any one of them with just your birth certificate and your driver's license. The U.S. Virgin Islands are located in the Caribbean Sea, south of Florida and 40 miles east of Puerto Rico. The islands feature a year round tropical climate and white sand beaches.

    Puerto Rico

    • Located in the Caribbean Sea is the island of Puerto Rico, which is a United States territory. Travelers between the island of Puerto Rico and the United States are not required to present a passport for international travel. Puerto Rico is a tourist destination because of its warm weather all year long and its numerous beach resorts and vacation destinations. Puerto Rico is located only 40 miles from the U.S. Virgin Islands, the only other Caribbean island territory that belong to the U.S. and dos not require travelers to carry a U.S. passport.

    Hawaii

    • Hawaii is not a Caribbean Island. In fact, Hawaii isn't even located anywhere near the Caribbean. The Hawaiian Islands are located close to 3,000 miles southwest of California in the Pacific Ocean. Other than the U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico, Hawaii is the only other island U.S. residents can travel to without a passport. Though unlike the U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico, Hawaii is one of the 50 states in the U.S., rather than just a territory owned by the U.S. Hawaii is famous for it's tropical climate and beautiful landscape, with white sand beaches, clear blue water and views of the mountains and volcanoes along all of the islands.
