Adult passports are issued to people age 16 and older and minor passports are for people 15 and under. A passport book is required for international air travel but a passport card can be used for cruises or land travel.
The fee, as of 2010, is $110 to renew an adult passport and $30 to renew a passport card. For minors, renewing the passport costs $80 plus a $25 execution fee. The passport card is $15 plus a $25 execution fee.
If you need the passport renewal process expedited, it will cost an extra $60. If you want the passport shipped overnight once it is ready, it will cost an additional $14.96.
Adults can renew their passport through the mail or in person. Minors must apply in person.
To renew your passport, the existing passport must be in good condition, issued when you were at least 16 years old and be issued less than 15 years ago in your current name. You must also submit Form DS-82.
