Visa Rules in Germany

International travel involves time, preparation and often a lot of planning, including obtaining a visa. Visas regulate how long you can stay and what types of things you can do within a country. Tourists planning on travelling to Germany may be required to obtain a Schengen visa before they are allowed to enter the county, though US citizens with a valid US passport do not need a visa for tourist or business trips shorter than 90 days.
  1. Financially Stable

    • In order to be granted the visa you must be able to prove that you are financially stable. What German immigration will be looking for is that you will have enough money to support yourself as well as any dependents that will be travelling with you during the intended duration of your stay in Germany.

    Travel Insurance

    • Before you will be granted a visa you must be able to prove that you will have medical insurance during your stay in Germany. You must provide proof of medical insurance for yourself as well as for all of the dependents travelling with you.

    Criminal Activity

    • If you have a criminal record you may be denied entry into Germany on a Schengen visa. Also, once you are in Germany you are required to understand German law, and that any crime that you commit in Germany you will be accountable for. If you commit a crime in Germany it is a possibility that your visa will be revoked.

    Schengen Visa

    • A Schengen visa is a multiple entry visa that will allow you to enter Germany. The Schengen zone consists of several European countries so if you are approved for a Schengen visa to enter Germany you will also be able to enter any country within the Schengen zone. You can enter any country within the Schengen zone multiple times within a three month period. You are not allowed to stay within the Schengen zone longer than three months without an extension.

    Schengen Extension

    • If you wish to stay in Germany longer than three months then you must apply for a Schengen extension. The extension is available for people who can continue to prove that they will be financially stable during their trip and will continue to have travel insurance during this time. You must also be able to prove that the reason on which you entered the country has either been postponed or extended. This can be verified by submitting a letter of postponement to the immigration officer. Therefore it is nearly impossible for vacationers or tourists travelling at their own pace to be granted and extension.

    Rules for Working

    • The Schengen visa does not allow you to work in Germany. If you obtain a job in Germany you must apply for the appropriate work visa before entering Germany. Those who work on a Schengen visa can be fined, imprisoned, or deported.

    Rules for Study

    • People entering the country to take a short class (within the three-month duration of the trip) with a school other than a German university will be able to do so on the Schengen visa. However, if your studies intend on keeping you in Germany for longer than three months, or you have been accepted to study in a German University, you must apply for the appropriate student visa before you enter the country.
