Requirements for a Japanese Tourist Visa

Due to the close ties the U.S. has with Japan, U.S. citizens can enjoy a trip to Japan for up to 90 days without a visa. However, if you're not a U.S. citizen, you will need to apply for a tourist visa. Most applications are reviewed within four business days.
  1. Valid Passport

    • Applicants are required to have a valid signed passport. The passport must be valid for at least six months from the time of application. The passport needs to have one blank page for the visa to be attached.

    Visa Application Form

    • Applicants must complete and sign the "Visa application form to enter Japan." This can be downloaded from Japan's embassy website (linked in Resources).

    Photograph

    • Attach one photograph to the form "Visa application form to enter Japan". The photograph is required to measure 2 inches by 2 inches (45 millimeters by 45 millimeters).

    Evidence of Funds

    • Applicants are required to provide evidence that they can fund their trip to Japan. Acceptable documents include a recent bank statement. If the applicant isn't funding the trip, then he must include a letter from the person who is giving him financial assistance for the trip.

    Flight Itinerary

    • A printed flight itinerary is necessary specifying the length of your stay in Japan. This can be obtained direct from the airline company or from a travel agency. You are advised not to make any definitive travel arrangements or purchase the airline ticket before the visa is issued.

    Purpose of Visit

    • You are required to provide documents supporting the purpose of your visit. If you plan on sightseeing, you are required to include a letter of the places you intend to visit, as well as details of your hotel reservations. If the purpose of your trip is to visit friends or family, you need to include the form "Reason for Invitation" (linked in Resources) completed and signed by your friend or relative.
