What Is a Fiance Visa?

The U.S. government will allow U.S. citizens to bring their foreign fiances to America to live, if they meet all the requirements. Citizens can download and file the application form Form I-129F with the Department of Homeland Security's U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services.
  1. Requirements

    • Applicants are required to present fingerprints and a medical examination along with a processing fee. Visa holders are required to be married within 90 days of entering the United States.

    Considerations

    • The fiance visa is only good for a single entry to the United States. The visa holder will not be allowed to leave the United States and return again unless he applies to the government for an emergency travel request.

    Time Frame

    • According to the U.S. Department of State, the processing time varies from case to case and can depend on the processing site where the application is submitted.

    Misconceptions

    • Having a fiance visa doesn't grant the holder permission to work within the United States. An application for employment authorization must be filed along with the visa to work in the United States.

    Ineligible

    • An applicant can be ineligible for entry under certain circumstances, such as having HIV or AIDS, and submitting fraudulent documents.
