A J-1 visa is a document that allows a person participating in cultural exchange programs to stay in the United States without immigrating.
A J-1 visa lasts for the full duration of the visitor's exchange program. The visitor has a 30-day grace period after the end of the program during which they can remain in the U.S. to sort out their travel plans.
A J-1 visa requires sponsorship from a government agency or from the American branch of the cultural exchange program in which the visitor is participating. Personal and family sponsorships are not acceptable.
Once they leave the U.S., visitors with a J-1 visa must remain in their home country for at least two years before they can return to the United States. There are a few exceptions to this, including cases of persecution.
Examples of those who may be eligible for a J-1 visa include au-pairs who will be studying while in the United States, medical doctors, and teachers of other languages.
