Canada Citizen Visiting USA Rules

The rules regarding travel between the United States and Canada have changed. Rules and regulations vary according to the nature of travel and the length of stay.
  1. The Basics

    • Canadian citizens wishing to travel to the U.S. and/or re-enter Canada must present a Canadian passport, enhanced driver's license or NEXUS card.

    Visa

    • Canadian citizens do not normally require a visa for a temporary visit to the United States, but there are some exceptions. They include, but are not limited to, foreign government officials, U.S. citizen's foreign citizen spouses traveling to the U.S. to complete the immigration progress, treaty traders/investors and business travelers.

    Business Travel

    • Business visas vary according to the nature of the business transacted while on U.S. soil. For example, an individual traveling to the U.S. to compete in an athletic competition would obtain a different visa from a university professor traveling for a lecture.

    Study in the U.S.

    • Canadian citizens wishing to study in the United States must apply and be approved for a student visa.

    Work in the U.S.

    • Citizens of Canada who plan on obtaining temporary employment in the United States must apply for a temporary worker's non-immigrant visa. The type of non-immigrant work visa you apply for is contingent on the type of work you anticipate doing.
