How Make an Oilcloth for the Ground

Oilcloth is a natural-fiber fabric that has been coated with linseed oil to achieve enhanced durability and water-resistance. What is referred to as oilcloth today is often vinyl-coated synthetic-fiber fabric. Natural oilcloth is difficult to find in stores. Fortunately, it is relatively simple to make. Various textiles can be used as a base, such as cotton, canvas or linen. Thicker fabric is recommended for outdoor use. Linseed or castor oil can be used to coat and seal the cloth, resulting in a water-resistant cloth useful as an outdoor rug.

Instructions

    • 1

Wash the fabric to be used with laundry detergent.

    • 2

Lay your desired fabric outdoors on a clean, flat surface.

    • 3

Cut fabric to the size needed. A standard outdoor rug measures 8 feet by 10 feet.

    • 4

Coat one side of the fabric with linseed or castor oil using the paintbrush. Alternatively, a commercial varnish can be used, but will not necessarily result in a natural product.

    • 5

Allow the oil or varnish to dry for one day. The oil should soak into the fabric and be firm to the touch.

    • 6

Apply two more coats, allowing each to dry in the same manner.

    • 7

After drying the final coat, turn the fabric over and apply three coats to the other side in the same manner.

    • 8

Lay the oilcloth on the ground in the place of your choice. Be aware that the oilcloth will kill any plants and grass underneath.
