About Carry-On Bags

Carry-on bags are permitted on most domestic and international flights, and make it easier for passengers to have access to personal items. Carry-on bags must meet certain size and weight requirements so that they can fit into an overhead compartment or under a seat in front of the passenger.
  1. Types

    • Carry-on bags are available in a variety of styles, designs and sizes. The most common types of carry-on bags are wheeled duffel bags, rolling totes, expandable upright bags, weekender convertible bags, backpacks, computer/laptop bags and sports style totes. Carry-on bags may be made with a hard shell design, leather or a thick nylon exterior. Some bags are designed with a lightweight frame construction for better handling.

    Sizes

    • The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and various airlines have determined specific size requirements for carry-on luggage. Standard measurements are 22 by 14 by 9 or 45 inches total--height plus width plus length. These carry-on luggage dimensions include all handles, wheels and other extrusions. Some airlines also have weight requirements for carry-on luggage, so the bag must be weighed before boarding the flight.

    Function

    • Carry-on bags that are designed with wheels make it easier to travel across long distances without having to hold the handles. The wheels can be locked in place and may be pushed inside the bag when not in use. Expandable trolley bags can hold suits, dresses and other types of clothing without causing wrinkles. Convertible bags may turn into mini-backpacks or totes when they are not being used as carry-on luggage.

    Considerations

    • Carry-on bags that don't meet FAA or airline requirements may be transported as checked luggage and the passenger may be responsible for paying additional handling fees. Measuring the bags before flying and checking with the airline can reduce the chances that the bag will need to be transported as checked luggage or cargo. The Transportation Security Administration also requires all passengers to follow the 3-1-1 rule for transporting items in carry-on bags. Passengers may only carry a 3 oz. bottle or less, 1 qt.-sized, clear, plastic, zip-top bag, 1 bag per passenger placed which must be placed in the screening bin.

    Warnings

    • There are several items that can't be transported in carry-on luggage. The Transportation Security Administration has identified the following items as prohibited--box cutters, razors, scissors, sabers and knives; ammunition and firearms such as BB guns, flares and gun lighters; tools such as hatchets, screwdrivers, wrenches and saws; self-defense items such as brass knuckles, throwing stars and other martial arts weapons; explosive and flammable items such as lighter fluid, hand grenades, fireworks and blasting caps; gel-type candles; gel shoe inserts; spray paint; and any non-flammable gels or aerosols larger than 3 oz.
