Attractions Near the Javits Center in NYC

The Jacob Javitz Convention Center is a large glass and steel convention venue on the west side of Manhattan. It sits on a plot of land that runs from 34th to 39th streets between 11th and 12th avenues. The building is smaller than the convention centers in most major cities and has caused New York City to have been passed over for major events in the past. Despite this drawback, the center continues to thrive, thanks to its location at the heart of America's global city.
  1. Circle Line Tours

    • Circle Line Tours have been synonymous with nighttime Manhattan tourism and New York City proms for decades. The iconic ferry line is based along the Hudson River at 42nd street, a few blocks north of the Javitz Center. Circle Line offers daily music and sightseeing cruises, as well as special events charters and the massive speedboat "The Beast," which ushers passengers around the island at high speed.

The popular standard sightseeing tours run three hours and are reasonably priced. Kids under 2 years old are free. Southern Manhattan, Harbor Lights and Liberty Island Cruises are also available for slightly lower rates.

    Intrepid Museum

    • The Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum is set onboard the venerable aircraft carrier USS Intrepid at 46th street and the Hudson River. The ship itself is part of the attraction as visitors are free to inspect it in its entirety, including its full cargo of warplanes, historical aircraft and the Explorium Hall filled with air and space exhibits, and space capsules.

Outside on deck, you will find more aircraft including an SR-71 Blackbird, one of the now defunct Concorde passenger jets, an F-16, F-14 and a collection of helicopters like the Cobra, Huey and Apache. Next to the carrier, guests can board the diesel-electric Growler submarine. There is also a flight simulator on site that you can try for an additional fee of $10.

    Madison Square Garden

    • As well as being the home of the Knicks and the Rangers, Madison Square Garden (MSG) is the site of constant major events, concerts and shows throughout the year. Check the calendar for any given week and you will find world-class acts and unrivaled variety shows.

The Garden has been called "the Mecca of basketball" by none other than "His Airness," Michael Jordan. MSG is located at 33rd and 8th Avenue, about four blocks from the Javitz Center.

    Time Square

    • Time Square needs no introduction. Visitors to Manhattan seek out this formerly seedy crossroads of the world for its many attractions and overall Wow factor. The headquarters for New Year's Eve celebrations, Broadway theater, neon lighting and tourist attractions, Times Square is a beacon for the out-of-towner.

In addition you will find several movie theaters, countless restaurants, hotels, comedy clubs, chain stores, and street vendors in and around Times Square. If you would like to see a show, visit the discount TKTS booth in the square for cut-rate day-of-show tickets.

    Jacob Javitz Convention Center

    • The Jacob Javitz Center is home to several large events each year, some of which are attractions in themselves, including the annual Auto Show, Boat Show and Travel Show, each of which draws thousands of visitors from around the world.

The car show is a stage often used to release new models and innovation for the motoring world, while the boat show is a big boy's toy shop. The New York Times Travel Show is a showcase where destinations from around the world display their best, and luminaries from all parts of the travel industry including authors, TV personalities and radio talk show hosts share their expertise.
