How to Get From Frankfurt to Munich

Travel in Western Europe is relatively easy if you do your research. Large metropolitan cities like Frankfurt and Munich have several means of travel, including air, autobahns and extensive railway systems. Munich is in the Bavarian Alps in southern Germany. It has a population of about 1.3 million people and many museums, castles and world class restaurants. It's also the home of Oktoberfest. This free event is held from late September to early October. The first Oktoberfest was held to commemorate the marriage of Crown Prince Ludwig and Princess Therese in 1810.

  Rent a car. Munich is about three and a half hours away from Frankfurt, or about 190 miles. You can rent a car at Frankfurt's airport from many of the major car rental companies, such as Alamo, Avis, Budget, Enterprise and Hertz.
  
  Take the autobahn for an exciting driving experience, or spend a day or two investigating charming towns and castles along the "Romantic Road." The Romantic Road runs from Wuerzburg to Fuessen. You can hop on and off the autobahn to speed up your trip, as it parallels the Romantic Road.

  Book a flight. Frankfurt Airport (FRA) is Germany's largest airport, while the Franz Joseph Strauss International Airport in Munich (MUC) is the second largest. US Airways, Thai, Air Berlin and Alitalia are among the airlines that offer flights between Frankfurt and Munich. Lufthansa has nonstop service to Munich and will get you there in about an hour.

  Reserve a train ticket. Rick Steves recommends using the Deutsche Bahn website for regional travel as well as travel throughout Europe. It takes roughly three and a half hours to travel from Frankfurt to Munich by train. Main stations are generally called "Central" or "Hauptbahnhof" (HBF), an especially important note when making a reservation.
