How to Get a Re-Entry Permit

If you are considering traveling outside of the United States for more than a year, you need a re-entry permit before you leave so that are allowed to return. If you have a re-entry permit, you do not have to obtain a returning resident visa when you come back to the United States. Consider a re-entry permit if you want to use it as your main travel document and do not wish to obtain a passport from your home country.
